Project Overview
Oshkosh Underground was a concert production organization that myself and a fellow classmate had formed in the Fall of 2011 at UW-Oshkosh. Early on in our operations as a production duo, I realized that in our search for local bands we were turning to Facebook to find musicians and to listen to their music. Not only to most bands have Facebook fan page, but they almost always post their music or links to it. It had become a very efficient mode of soliciting for musicians, so Facebook became the hub of our organization's operations.
What I Did

After getting the Oshkosh Underground Facebook page up and running, we began to use it to solicit for local musicians. We shared our page like crazy with our fellow students and musicians asking them all to post links to their band's fan pages if they were interested in playing some local shows. The initial interest we got was awesome! We got 62 likes in the first two weeks, all from the Wisconsin area. This workflow for finding local artists turned out to be much more efficient than searching for them ourselves. This way, the musicians came to us and we could know for sure that they were interested in working with us.
Some of the features of Facebook that I also utilized for our organization was a tab for a Street Team, using Timeline to connect with our audience, for promotion, and using a private group for internal communication. The plan for the Street Team tab was for it to be a place to post links to promotional materials like posters or handbills for either the musicians or people who just wanted to help promote. I also used the Milestones feature on Timeline to show the history of Oshkosh Underground; since our demographic consisted of college students just like myself and my partner, I made Milestones for our first shows or for when we first started working together in order to personally connect with our audience. We also took great advantage of the event page feature on Facebook, using it as a really big means of spreading the word about our shows. And lastly, since there was always so many details to be discussing in terms of booking, planning, and managing our shows, I created a private group on Facebook for myself and my partner so we would have a place to efficiently communicate without sending a million emails every day.
Planning for the Future
In terms of social media, Facebook is the only platform that Oshkosh Underground used. Oshkosh Underground produced three concerts before parting ways, but while it was still functioning, using Facebook to conduct business and recruit musical acts was a very efficient workflow in the college setting. Had the organization continued, this Facebook page would have become the a hub of information for on-campus entertainment. Future plans might have consisted of adding a Twitter account into the mix, tweeting live from the shows or using it to better promote them. But in the short time this organization was operating, using Facebook as a whole to conduct it's activites was successful in many ways.
